About Department

The Department of Engineering Sciences and Humanities, SIT, provides the basic foundation courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Mechanical Science and Humanities (English) mainly to the first year B.Tech students in all the streams of engineering disciplines being offered at the Siliguri Institute of Technology. The department caters the need for science and humanities papers for higher semesters also. Presently the student intake is 420 at the B.Tech 1st year for the five Engineering streams.

The faculty members of this department are continuing to contribute quite significantly in the area of research as evidenced from research publications in reputed international journals. The faculty members have published several books with national and international publishers. Two national level major research projects are continuing at this department – one DST funded project and one CSIR funded project.

The following are the glimpse of different sections along with the respective subject in-charges.

Dr. Susanta Kumar Saha
Asst. Prof. & In-charge, Chemistry

About the Chemistry Section...

The Chemistry section teaches the fundamental courses like, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Chemistry-Lab and Basic Environmental Engineering to the 1st year and 2nd year B. Tech students with the aim to impart to them conceptual knowledge about the various application of this subject in different engineering disciplines.

Mr. Bhaskarananda Dasgupta
Asst. Prof. & In-charge, Engineering (Mechanical)

About the Engineering (Mechanical) Section ...

Mechanical engineering is one of the most diverse disciplines which include Engineering Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Engineering, Material Science & Material Handling and very important practical sessions on Mechanical Workshop, Engineering Drawing & Thermal Engineering Lab. This section delivers the fundamental knowledge related to Mechanical Engineering which is very important for an engineering student, irrespective of any department.

Dr. Jayanta Dutta
Asst. Prof. & In-charge, Mathematics

About the Mathematics Section...

The Mathematics section is highly proficient in teaching Mathematics to the first year and higher semester students of all engineering streams. Engineering cannot sustain without mathematics and therefore this section is dedicated to develop among the students a strong mathematical base which is of fundamental importance in order to launch them successfully into their respective fields.

Mr. Rajeev Chetri
Asst. Prof. & In-charge, Humanities

About the Humanities Section ...

The humanities section strives to develop flair and competencies in business English to budding technocrats and managers so that they may acquire adequate knowledge of proper representation as well as sound communication skills to meet their professional and corporate aspirations. The section boasts of a state-of-the-art Professional Communication Laboratory set up by Centre for Advanced Communication (CACM), STEP IIT- Kharagpur with the objective of developing and refining the language skills of the students.

About the Physics Section ...

Department of Physics is an important part in the academic curriculum where the students of different B.Tech. streams are introduced to the various subfields of physics. This section provides to the students the basic foundation and concepts of the underlying principles of Physics for precise application in their respective engineering fields.

Facilities:

Departmental Library:

In addition to the central library, different books of science and humanities subjects are available in the Departmental Library. The Departmental Library contains about 300 books with more than 40 titles.

Language Lab:

The language laboratory is an audio-visual installation used as an aid in modern language teaching. The students are guided with the advanced classes, to face the interviews with special training of voice modulation and personality development. Equipped with the modern technology, like digital screen and audio, the students are envisioned with power point presentation and advertising world. Moreover the students are practiced for the correct pronunciation of words and regular exercise of word building and sentence formation in English. Games, such as “catch the chicken”, “fish bowling” are played for the term “learn while you play” are exercised. Body language and business etiquette is given the first priority for the development of the student in the lab. The teacher and student is faced one to one for the proper development of the student.

Chemistry Lab:

Spacious and well-equipped laboratory to cater all the needs for B. Tech 1st year students.

Mechanical Workshop:

Well equipped with all kinds of modern machines and instruments, those are required according to the curricular for B. Tech students.

Physics Lab:

Both the Physics Lab-1 (for B. Tech 1st year students) and Physics Lab-2 (for B. Tech 2nd year students) are well equipped and well maintained.

Graphics Lab:

Spacious and long graphics hall equipped with standard drawing boards. The lab is also equipped with AUTOCAD facility.
