Hotel Management and Catering Technology

The Department of Hotel Management and Catering Technology were established to provide quality education in Hotel Management and is entirely tuned with the needs of the hospitality industry. The program is approved by the AICTE and is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology.

To keep the students updated with the advancements in hospitality industry, the department organizes regular workshops and seminars inviting eminent national and international experts.

Assessing individual aptitude the department also encourages students to develop self or cooperative employment projects or to go for higher professional studies.

It has been observed that apart from Hotels, Restaurants, Other eateries, Canteens of Corporate, Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Guest Houses, Health Spas etc., hotel management students are being appointed in large numbers in other service sectors like Banks, Airlines, Railways, Cruise ships, Central & state Tourism Corporations, Call Center, Multiplexes, Shopping malls, etc. Apart from service sector companies, other large companies and multinational companies have started recruiting hotel management graduates and hotel managers particularly for jobs related to customer contact and marketing.

Admission is offered for BHMCT

Admission is offered for BHMCT through JEHOM examination.

Number of approved seats for BHMCT : 45 students

Duration : 4 Years

Admission is offered for BBM (Hospitality)

Admission is offered for BBM (Hospitality) through Common Entrance Test (CET). All aspiring applicants must be passed the Higher Secondary or 10+2 system as recognized by Association of Indian Universities.

Number of approved seats for BBM (Hospitality): 30 students

Duration : 3 Years




Training and Placement

Hotel Management and Catering Technology Department its own Training and Placement Cell which maintains a symbiotic, vibrant and purposeful relationship with the Hospitality Organizations across the nation. The team comprises of training experts and experienced academicians. Paid Internship programs are organized in premier properties around the country. An internship program (also known as Industrial Training Program) is considered as a pre-professional experience that allows a student to gain hands-on experience and academic credit at the same time. It is compulsory for the students to undergo the training program as a part of the curriculum. Internship placements are for 22 weeks where a student gains valuable work experience and the opportunity to feel the pulse of the industry. A student is exposed to all the major functional departments of a hotel during this training. The Training and placement cell takes care of the complete process from arrangement of interview till the placement of student. The department also remains in regular touch with the organizations to know the whereabouts of the student during the period of training.

After successfully completing Hotel Management degree, job opportunities remain open in various sectors like Hotels, Restaurants, Airlines, Cruise lines, Hospitals, Corporate House, Industrial and Institutional Canteen etc. Many students make their career as entrepreneur. The students of SIT are placed through Campus Recruitment program. Till date the department has maintained the reputation for arranging QUALITY PLACEMENT for the students. Strong liaison and bond is in place with top chain of hotels in India and abroad like Taj, Hyatt, Clarks, Holiday Inn, Radisson, Ramada, Majorda and other similar reputed organizations.

Mr. Santanu Dasgupta The Department of Hotel Management & Catering Technology, at Siliguri Institute of Technology, was set under affiliation of W.B.U.T in 2005 as only A.I.C.T.E approved Hotel Management College in entire North Bengal & North East India, to bridge the gap in the demand & supply of manpower for Hospitality service industry. The course enables students to complete their education with Specialization and Research Project in the area of their own interest in Hospitality Service Industry.To strengthen the skill in each operational area, department provides well equipped practice lab.The Food and Beverage Production Lab enables students to acquire first hand culinary skills in production of Indian and International cuisine in individual and quantity preparations, Bakery and Confectionary delicacies.The Food Service lab supports students to develop skills in international styles of Foods and Beverages display and table services. Both Production and Service Training have enough scopes to establish their innovative ideas too.The Front Office lab helps acquiring highest degree of etiquettes and protocols to handle people of Social, National and International VIP and Celebrities.The House-Keeping lab portrays top class hotel guest rooms supported with laundry services enables students to practice interior services and facility providence to guest rooms.Computer lab practice with latest hotel operation software is a compulsory for the students since modern hospitality management is fully dependent on automated system. Furthermore, the most modern Language lab lends support to groom students in active global communication.In spite of above the students are to undergo an Industrial Training for an entire semester of six months organized in top rank Indian hotel properties after two years of studies.The department provides number of Seminars, Workshops and Lecture sessions, in regular interval, enriching students and faculties and professional stake holders in sharing the knowledge and skill of eminent National and International Professionals and Educators.The process of extending such external supports in addition with the continuous efforts of departmental faculties, extensive use of modern teaching aids and service of well chosen stock of library books help the students to allow them placed with prestigious industrial houses or groom them for higher management studies.The first batch passed out in the year 2009 and Ms Sujeta Banerjee was awarded Graduation with Gold medal by the University. This appreciation continued in the next year also when Mr. Ankur Pal, won Silver Medal in 2010 Graduation list of West Bengal University of Technology in BHMCT.The department is proud to inform that 100% placement assistance is being given and almost all students bag job offers much before their final examination. Some students have successfully completed/continuing higher education while some are well settled in abroad too.Number of 5star and top chain group hotels like ITC, Oberoi, Taj, Holiday inn, Hyatt, J W Marriot, Radisson, Ista, Pride, Club Mahindra, Royal Sarovar, ,Mayfair, Clarks and Bengal Ambuja groups of hotels organize regular campus and off campus interview to select our students at various positions.
